Either, and anything in between that keeps your as a complete person from interacting with the waking/living/physical world. Though I can speak from experience that being in the astral plane simply leaves your physical body behind unprotected.
Side bar: it's also not a pleasure cruise to have someone else literally in your head and take the wheel when they wish, but that's another discussion. So you can be physically functional and active while your consciousness is imprisoned.
