The what was unexpected. The complete lack of reaction, relaxed stance as he tried to reason with her. It did sound crazy, and he had no evidence to back up that claim but there was one thing he did have, a lack of reaction. There was no guilt or anguish, he took absolutely no responsibility for this and even though she might not be able to predict Edward's response to her taunts, she'd already done this. She knew what to expect because it worked like a charm, and yet things had gone so differently here.

It's only for that reason that she entertains the idea of believing him.
