"We thought she was dead." This did make him wonder what the kid's results were, all things considered, but he couldn't argue how fucked up it was, even if he wanted to. His next response was quieter, "I don't know how your attempt went, but I'm pretty sure Al was more focused on not letting me bleed to death after everything."

The taunting was familiar, that checked out. "Yeah, she tried to use that against us too." He glanced away, trying to push some of those memories aside and focus on the here and now. "Pretending to be her, when she's not."

When the teen mentioned 'what the deal was' between them Ed tensed, but didn't comment. The deal was that she wanted him dead, and the kid had made that connection on his own, he couldn't imagine there was much more about it to explain.
