"Al insisted we would go back together, but that's not how it works. Trying to force it could have really messed things up in that reality, it wasn't a risk I was willing to take even if I wanted to." Which he hadn't, Amestris wasn't a home for him anymore, even if he went back to his own timeline he'd just wind up in Germany. The other Ed had died to get him home, and for what? He didn't want a repeat of that. That's why he'd never been in a rush to find out how to pull it off. There wasn't a whole lot left for him there anymore, ironic considering what his life had become instead, knowing that he'd die here no matter what he did to try to fight it.
